Listening activity: Fill in the Beats and Boost Your Listening Skills!

This listening activity involves listening to a song and filling in the gaps with the words provided in a table beforehand.

Instructions:

  1. The students are given a sheet with the lyrics of the song 'Imagine' by John Lennon, but with some missing words. Additionally, the sheet includes a table with the words that they need to put in the corresponding blanks.
  2. Before playing the song, show the table to the students and explain that they need to listen carefully to the song and fill in the gaps with the correct words.
  3. Play the song once or twice, depending on the difficulty and speed of the song. Students should listen attentively and fill in the table as they listen to the song.
  4. After listening to the song, allow students to compare their answers with a partner or in small groups to check the accuracy of their completions.
  5. Conduct a group review where students can share their answers and discuss any differences or questions that may arise.
  6. If possible, replay the song so that students can listen again and sing along, reinforcing their listening comprehension and enjoyment of the music.

This song-based listening activity with gap filling is a fun and effective way to develop students' listening skills and vocabulary. By actively participating in the activity, students immerse themselves in the language, improve their listening ability, and practice applying vocabulary in an authentic and engaging context.

  1. Hello Maria Rosalía.
I believe that music is the best way to learn and reinforce knowledge. Choosing this song by John Lennon for your activity seems to me a very nice idea and at the same time very appropriate.
I think it is a good activity to work in groups, where students can share their ideas.
I think that a good idea would be at the end of the activity for the students to say what feelings the song conveyed to them.
    Thanks. Yolanda Queija

  2. Good afternoon. In my opinion, one of the best ways to learn how to speak and express a new language is through listening. In fact, most of the time when you search for tips on improving your pronunciation in English on the internet, it suggests watching movies, series, or listening to songs. That's why I believe this activity is the best way to learn listening since music makes the process of learning something new much more motivating.

On the other hand, in my opinion, the choice of the song depends a bit on the age of the children. Some of them may have never heard this song before, so it might be a little more challenging for them. However, it is true that the vocabulary level is very simple, which makes it a good choice.

Congratulations on all the content of the blog.

  3. Hi Maria! I love that you use music as a resource for learning English. It's a fun way to learn. I think it would have been interesting to make the lyrics interactive with, for example, live worksheets, that way the students could have done the task from home.
