Speaking activity: Flashcard Frenzy. Speak it Out and Guess the Word!

The aim of this activity is to promote English speaking practice and to develop oral communication skills in elementary students using flashcards.

Instructions:

  1. Prepare a set of flashcards with relevant vocabulary for the students about classroom objects.  There is a PDF with flashcards from the British Council.
  2. Divide the students into pairs or small groups. Make sure each group has a set of flashcards.
  3. Explain to the students that they will be playing a description game using the flashcards. The goal is to describe the image in English without directly mentioning the name of the object.
  4. In each round, one student from each pair or group takes a flashcard without showing it to the others.
  5. The student with the flashcard must describe the image in English using complete sentences and appropriate vocabulary. For example, if the flashcard shows a picture of a pencil case, the student could say, "It's an object to keep crayons"
  6. The other students in the group listen attentively to the description and try to guess the object. They can ask additional questions for more clues if needed.
  7. Once the object is guessed correctly, pass the flashcard to the next student in the round and continue the game.
  8. Ensure that each student has the opportunity to describe different flashcards to practice speaking and listening skills.
  9. To add variety, you can introduce different types of flashcards, such as action cards where students have to act out an action related to the image, or comparison cards where they compare two objects and explain the similarities and differences.

This speaking activity with flashcards provides a fun and practical opportunity for elementary students to practice their oral English skills. By describing the images using complete sentences and appropriate vocabulary, students improve their fluency and confidence in using the language. Additionally, working in small groups promotes interaction among students and creates a collaborative learning environment.
